Notes of love and graffiti messages cover the entrance to the courtyard. Passing the first floor of Juliet’s house, the bride makes her way to the second floor approaching her husband to be. The couple sit on two medieval influenced chairs, meticulously carved, facing their guests, a big, marble fireplace adorned with flowers, sits behind them. After the ceremony, head to the location where Romeo and Juliet first pronounced their love – the balcony. Looking down into the cobbled courtyard champagne and little culinary delights are being served to friends and family. The guests look up to the happy couple and raise their glasses, a toast to their future health and happiness.

On the terrace the groom presents his bride with a lovestone, the copy of which has become part of the paving where they now stand. On the terrace, which overlooks the courtyard and Juliet’s balcony, the wedding party is privileged to the privacy of such an important venue. After dinner and some light dancing, the couple retire to their room, situated in a hotel which shares Juliet’s courtyard. In five star comfort relaxing on a four-poster bed, they recount the day’s events.

Literature of love

"There is no world without Verona walls,
But purgatory, torture, hell itself.
Hence-banished is banish'd from the world,
And world's exile is death."

Not only does Shakespeare use this enchanting city as the setting for one of his most famous plays but millions of tourists a year visit to experience its historical beauty. Verona has paid homage to the British playwright by taking this quote from the romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet and engraving it on a plaque, and positioned next to it is a bronze cast of the respected writer.  Passing through the entrance to the courtyard where Juliet’s balcony is positioned there are scribbling and testimonies of love in various languages. This practice of graffiti is not permitted, however, once the walls have been painted new proclamations appear as bold and as determined as ever. Some romantic couples have attached paper messages of love onto the walls entering the courtyard.

People who would like to personify their love in stone can do so by writing a love message which is then engraved into a paving stone and set into the terrace floor which overlooks the balcony. A statue of Juliet is in the courtyard and a charm has befitted it. People of all ages, men, women, and different nationalities touch the right breast of Juliet to bring them luck in future relationships. Young women standing on the balcony play out in their head the moment of Juliet’s longing desires, looking down on the crowd below searching for their very own Romeo. The local council of Verona have recently opened up the house to couples who want to cement their future within the walls of Juliet’s house. Couples from all over the world go to get married at the scene of the eternal lovers’ first kiss.

Verona's Arena

However, Verona’s story didn’t start there. A stroll around this small city of just over 250,000 inhabitants puts you in contact with architecture, history and influence of centuries. Situated on the River Adige the Romans understood the importance of such a location. The Arena a large amphitheatre originally lay outside the Roman walls, over time as the importance of this strategic location grew, the walls expanded and the Arena is now central and stands tall and impressive in Piazza Bra.  This inspiring amphitheatre entertained the masses with courageous gladiators. It has been extremely well–preserved, more so than its bigger and more famous  sister the Coliseum in Rome, and to such an extent that in more recent times it has hosted an array of performers, from operatic heroes and heroines like Maria Callas and Luciano Pavarotti to modern pop icons such as Pink Floyd and Elton John.

Historical beauty for a wedding setting

An important age to have impacted the artistic composition of Verona is the Middle Ages. Generally recognised in Europe as a dark time where art and science somehow lost their path, seen as almost a vacuum of ideas, it still managed to impact on the outstanding beauty and character that enchants the visitor, transporting them back in time where castles and honour were the values of the day. Castel Vecchio close to the city centre and San Zeno church a touch further out, play a central theme to the flavours encapsulated in the city, one can almost hear the clash of chain mail, the chatter of commoners and bustle of medieval markets.

Your wedding abroad with architecture and literature

Verona hosts many spectacular churches, museums and piazzas, each with their own place in time. There is a Piazza in particular dedicated to the poet Dante Alighieri.  His most celebrated work of art being the Divina Comedia (Divine Comedy).  Although Verona itself is far from being described as impressive in relation to its size, there is no doubting the strong breath-taking impact when entering the historical centre from any direction. With such amazing detail and design such as frescoes half-faded from the sun telling stories of religion and columns worn from past wars it is difficult not to feel part of that history and that somehow your own story intertwines and shapes its future.
